We get lots of questions about proper knife care and we get it, so we thought we'd make it simple.
Our blades are handmade using high carbon steels and custom made handle materials which do occasionally require upkeep.
Carbon steels will over time naturally patina especially when regularly in contact with highly acidic things like blood, citrus, etc. That is ok! It is normal for carbon steels to discolor slightly with use, just make sure you keep your knife clean and dry and it will last for generations to come!
A few things to remember:
1. NEVER put your knife through the dishwasher!!
Our knives are not made to be put in moist atmospheres such as the dishwasher or the bottom of the sink! Extended exposure to moisture allows corrosion to quickly set in.
The easiest way to keep your knife in the best condition is simply to wash and dry it immediately when you finish using it!
2. Never put a dirty knife back in it's sheath!
Putting nasty knives back into their sheaths, especially in the field, can allow moisture to soak into your sheath, nulling its protective properties and causing your knife to rust! Always clean your blade thoroughly before replacing it in it’s sheath!
3. Regularly clean and inspect your knife!
It’s easy to miss spots when cleaning your knife and it doesn't take much for corrosion to set in, so regularly inspect your knife for rust.
4. Oil your blade!
After each cleaning, especially any involving soap, dry your knife completely and apply a thin coat of your favorite food grade oil or our complimentary knife & board butter and wipe off any excess with a soft cloth!
Accidents happen and that's okay, if at any time your knife shows signs of excessive wear give us a shout! We offer free servicing and resharpening for life!!
